Maratha Reservation:
The Maratha leader Manoj Jarange Patil announced that his demands for Maratha Reservations have been accepted by the Maharashtra Government. He has started a hunger strike since Friday (26th January 2024) demanding, reservation in education and jobs for the Kunabi community under the OBC category.
Patil appreciated the Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde for accepting his demand and, told he will break his hunger strike by taking juice from the CM’s hand and during a press conference, he said that Chief Minister “Eknath Shinde has done a good job”. His demands were to include Kunbi certificates for free education From Kindergarten to post-graduation level and reservations for seats for Marathas in government job recruitments under the Other Backward Caste category.
The 40 year old, Mr. Patil had threatened earlier on Friday to stage a massive protest if their demands were not met. The Maratha leader planned a victory march today which will be held in Vashi. He also urged the Maharashtra government to withdraw cases registered against them because of the protest for Maratha reservation.
The Maharashtra Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha declared that an ordinance regarding Maratha reservation has been passed recently to give a concrete solution to all these problems. Manoj Patil appreciated the government action and acknowledged the solution while withdrawing his protest. As per the sources, CM Eknath Shinde will visit the protest site and Mr. Patil will conclude his hunger strike by taking juice from CM’s hand.
Patil has also mentioned that over 54 lakh Kunbi certificates will be provided soon to all individuals of Kunabi community and 37 lakh have already been given.
Earlier on 5th May 2024, the supreme court nullified the reservations for the Maratha community in jobs, higher educational institutions and colleges. The decision was made based on the absence of valid grounds to exceed the 50 percent reservation limit while implementing the Maratha reservation.
